Ret, You get some good answers here -- and even get told about not being shy about details from one of the smartest old codgers around. Good deal! Only detail I'd want to add to flesh out what BobM said is that the regulator works with an electromagnet that opens or closes a set of points. It's not like a dimmer switch or rheostat -- more like a digital circuit going on/off/on/off/on/off up to a few hundred times per minute. If you think of it that way, it's easy to understand why you'd get some flutter in the gauge. If you're getting big fluctions like 10 amps on the gauge -- take a multi meter and measure the output of the generator. If it's smooth and consistent, then the culprit is probably the voltage regulator. Steve
