In 1957 Ford and Chevy were locked in a horsepower race. HP ratings were painted on factory-sponsored NASCAR vehicles. The Chevy 283 with multiple carburetors was optomistically rated at 283 hp, while the Ford 312 was limited by its block and head design to around 250 hp regardless of carburetion. Ford went with the Paxton supercharger to go ahead. Chevy came back the next year with the 348, an adapted truck engine which became the "baby brother" of the 409. Meanwhile, Chrysler was building a 300 hp 326+/- cid Hemi.
