Dan - There's a pair of old-style (leather?) seals in the retainer as you discovered. However a single, new-style elastomer seal will seal the shaft and wear better than the 2 original seals did. You can put 2 new style seals in if you wish, but there is really no need too. Also if you find the shaft sealing surface has worn down where the leather seals rode on the shaft, you can position a single new seal so it rides on an unworn portion of the shaft.
