Just my $2.00Aus. worth, (about $1.30US). I was bought up on IH tractors without live PTO and operated all sorts of PTO gear. I learn't fairly early that the instant the clutch pedal was depressed and the torque load was taken off the trans. gears, it was possible to slip the tractor into neutral, thus removing the danger of over-run from the PTO. Make sure your brakes are in good shape. We didn't get live PTO untill about 1962. Now..... the safety angle of such a practice,...... I was very young.Redfan.
