Forget about marks; just put # 1 piston on top dead center at at the end of it's compression stroke and turn the distributor rotor so it points to #1 terminal on the cap & slide the distributor into mesh with the cam gear. With the crankshaft front pulley double mark aligned with the pointer, loosen the distributor hold down bolts, rotate the body of the distributor clockwise until the points are closed. Slowly rotate the distributor counter clockwise until the points just begin to open. Use an ohmmeter to indicate point opening. Or you could turn on the ignition switch ( if all wiring is intact & battery is charged) and hold the coil secondary wire (remove the cap end) near a grounded surface and watch for a spark. Lock down the bolts and timing is complete.
