In the 30's and 40's, a lot of tractors were sold that ran on 'distillate' as it was significantly cheaper than gasoline at the time. The problem with distillate is that it doesn't burn as easily, so the tractors were started on gasoline, run until they warmed up, then switched over to distillate. Distillate was somewhat similar to kerosene. It is NOT the same as diesel, as it was run through the carb just as gasoline is, not injected as a diesel would be. One mark of a distillate tractor is some sort of 'oven' around the carb to help heat the fuel so it would atomize better. It is common now to run the old "dual fuel" tractors on gasoline, as it produces slightly more horsepower and is cheaper than kero. I believe (not positive) that distillate motors ran slightly less compression and may be jetted differently.
