H hydraulic pump - run continuously?

A fellow in an earlier post had "wired" his lift-all lever in the lift position and used it to run a "live" hydraulic feed to a spool valve set-up. I had thought of using my belly pump like this to run a "live" system but wasn't sure if it would damage it leaving it running constantly, even when the spool valve it fed was closed. Would this cause damage, or would the spool valve just flow oil back to the resevoir when pressure wasn't needed? Even if it did, would running the pump continuously cause damage?
