Very elementary questions

Seems like I read on here that the rear crankshaft seal (felt) should be lubricated before installation. It doesn't leak, but I'm replacing it because I'm having the flywheel resurfaced on my Super H. Also, the associated gaskets, retainer gaskets, etc, just fell out when I took it apart. Obviously did not have gasket sealer at installation. Kind of nice not to have to scrape a lot of glop off -- But, should these gaskets have sealer? I never seem to know which gaskets to put sealer on. I suppose on most of them (head gasket excluded) it just holds the gasket in place during installation?
