I had the good fortune (20+ years ago)to have used one of these devices.....and still have all of my God given parts. The name wood splitter is not appropriate... the screw literally rips the wood apart. A neighbor had one mounted on a D14 Allis. Envision a giant wood screw being turned by the PTO shaft. The operator jams the wood onto the screw and allows the wood to rotate until it is stopped by the drawbar. At that point the screw does it's work. It looks even scarier than it sounds. For safety, a kill switch with a magnetic base was provided for mounting on the fender or some other convenient spot. I often wondered how I was going to reach that switch if I was caught by the screw and I was rotating at 540 rpm. The moral: I'd rather split by hand than ever use one of these screws again.
