Yes, you nailed the serial number break, I knew it was 1950, but didn't memorize it.
The heavier cam gear is rumered to have come along with the Super M. Parts books don't show a difference and I haven't had an early M apart to check. I know the parts books don't show all differences, but sometimes just the newest replacements such as with the Super H gas tank. Parts books only show one all the way back to the straight H, but found out the hard way that Series II tanks have the sediment bowl exit at a different location. I've always assumed a similar situation here, if it's true.
Should have read, "if you are going as far as pulling the whole front end apart to change the cover, certainly change the cam gear too. If you already have the newer cover, it would be alot less work to set a low pressure relief valve and use the original gear even if it is lighter." The stress comes from the pressure relief valve being set too high.
The only obvious difference here as stated before is the distance between the top mounting bolts.
