I just got my sleeves out, I used a 1" thick plate with supports on top, a 1" threaded rod and a 3/4 inch steel plate for the bottom of the sleeve. I used an impact to get the nut started on top, well......the 1" inch plate started to bend in the middle so I stopped with that and got the torch out heated the sleeve and it popped out just enough to straighten the steel plate on top up. Mine we're in extremely tight but I got them all out and unfortunatly only broke one sleeve. Your not missing anything, like you said they are 65 years old. Good luck hope this helps.
