It was 6 volts, positive ground from the factory.
To convert it to 12 volts, negative ground, I reccomend that you read the article "A Step-by-Step 12 Volt Conversion" By Bob M. Click on the Articles link at the left and scroll down to find it. It's a good, comprehensive article and should answer your questions.
