Dan, if the gas engine is in good condition the tractors drivetrain is probably ok, as the gas engine didn't have the torque of a diesel. plus not many people can't afford to feed gas to a 95 hp tractor. be advised that per IH service bullentin, a minimum of 91 octane fuel is required. also this engine was prone to piston noise or knock. 856 is a very good model tractor, but the gas engine makes it undesireable. also it is a 30+ yr old tractor, could be good or ready for scrap. tractor should be run to temp, make sure no oil warning lights come on when idled down. there are 2, 1 in gauge cluster for engine and 1 on dash be key for trans/ta lube pres.
