I can think of no reason screen savers should harm your monitor. Originally, screen savers were intended to prevent phosphor 'burn in' from having a static image on the monitor over a long period of time. With newer (say, last 10 years or so) monitor technology, screen savers aren't necessary, but they're not harmful either.
