I had the same problem with an ex-employee of mine. I bought a 1/8" plate steel approved by the post office at Lowe's or Home Depot. It's a heavy thing, so I just sat it on top of a 2x6 that I nailed to the post. My box still gets hit occasionally but all I have to do is pick it up out of the ditch and set it back on the post. My ex-employee plows snow part time for our township. He's hit it 5 times this winter, no damage to the box. I finally notified the trustees, box hasn't been hit since. I figure a picking the box out of the ditch and setting it on the post is easier on me than the stress of trying to catch the perpetrator. Its also cheaper than a half dozen new mailboxes every year.
