I have been doing it for years ----first wear eye protection the gases comming off the rundown battery can explode if you get a spark making or disconecting the batteries....don't cranck on the 6v starter to long at a time(count to 10 ,release)wait 3-4 min. try again....the idea is don't get the starter too hot.....caution never try to start a frozen battery....dead batteries can freeze in cold weather...
