Another thing to do while you're under there is set the valves. I'm a neophyte on this tractor stuff, too. I was surprised at how easy it was to set valves. Literally, the hardest part was getting the valve cover on and off. Setting the valves made a world of difference in how smooth and powerful my M ran. Some of the valves had so much clearance, I'm surprised the valve was opening at all (exaggeration). I don't like the idea of cleaning the oil passages. Ever. I had a friend who put some engine cleaner into his Dodge Dart. It cleaned the oil passages alright. Put all the gunk into the pan, and promptly plugged the oil pickup tube. He lost oil pressure and threw a rod. The engine was shot, but boy it had clean oil passages. If you don't have oil pressure problems, don't bother cleaning the oil passages, and don't worry about it either. If you still worry, change the oil and filter frequently and use detergent oil. The detergents in the oil will clean the passages slowly and safely. If you do have oil pressure problems, check the pump, pickup and pan first.
