SMTA Hyd Reservoir ?

All I wanted to do was replace a tiny little O ring in the reservoir to stop my little Exxon Valdez from running Hyd Fluid out the control lever. I got the O ring replaced. Now, I can't get the darn cover back on. There is a shaft on the control lever that must fit into the piston valve lever while the high pressure tube must fit into its slot. Tube goes in fine, but the shaft just will not slide into the piston lever. Anyone out there ever gotten one of these back together?
