Caterpiller engine

I was out at a farm Monday and noticed a old caterpiller stationary engine laying in a pile of other stuff. It was over on its side so I figure they don't want it or it is in pretty bad shape. What and where do I look for to try and identify it? And how is the price and availability for caterpiller parts. I am going to try and get it really cheap so even if its not going to be fixed anytime soon by me it will be better tooken care of. I know this is not about IH tractors but I trust yall wisdom and knowledge. Thanks
