The tractor would be able to successfully operate on heavier, cheaper (at the time) fuels such as distillate or tractor fuel. The engine had to be started on gasoline and switched over to the heavier fuel as the engine temperature came up. These fuels would have a tendency to condense into the engine oil supply and a quart of oil/fuel mix was usually drained at the start of the day and a fresh quart of oil added to top off the reservoir. The tractors are usually recognized by a smaller (2 quart or so) tank used for gasoline and a main tank used for fuel. My 1937 John Deere was operated that way. Now I run it on straight gasoline. (PS: I have more Farmalls than JD. It was Grandpa's first & only tractor; in fact he traded off my aunt's horse on the deal!)
