Thanks so much for saying (more clearly than I did) what I was trying to say! I'm not qualified to give a definitive answer on this subject, but the issue is being "clouded" as folks express their opinions. Some of this is really pretty simple, and some (especially when we start talking about the counter EMF as the magnetic field in the coil collapses) is a little more complicated. (I'm still chewing on that part!) There are some complex theories to take into account in the operation of this type of ignition system, but at this point, I'm agreeing totally with you, Corky, that the 6-volt voltage drop across that coil when the points shut is going to be the same, regardless of where the resistor is!
