People brought a lot of those engines into the shop I worked for, and they had cracks between the sleeves from freezing, it was quite normal on the top by the head where it didn't leak, but frequently, there would be one or two at the bottom. That is where you would be getting a water leak, usually, although there could be one on the top of the head, too. Look for milky looking oil deposits inside the valve cover, that is a sign of water leaks.
