I think you will find most tractors left the factory with narrow fronts. Just look at the pictures of tractors leaving the factory, more tractors will fit on railcar with narrow fronts, cost of shipping. The wide front depended on what dealer or regional distribution could get their hands on. I have seen a Farmall 300 with the old style front end, guy who owns it claims his father bought it new with that wide front. I wouldn't even believe the IH parts books.

You have the same with Super A-1 and Super MTA. Anyone would have to be damn naive to believe these tractors resulted from any great management decission. It is quite clear tractors were selling well and there was sheet metal from SA and SM and chassis for the new 100 and 400 were ready. There seemed to be at IH also a strong determination to introduce the 100, 200, 300 and 400 all new at same time and with great fanfare.

You add to all of this changes made by users in the past fifty years. It will just surprise you what will fit and where. And yes, even as simple as putting the wrong decals on tractor.
