I've wondered that myself. My thought is that it would be to hold the clutch disengaged while you hand crank started the beast. Of course you would still put the Transmission in neutral for starting. However the clutch disengaged would release any drag from the transmission and the Lift All. These things have a lot of drag to hand crank, even in gas starting mode. I recall a few attempts at crank starting ours when I was a teenager, but few such attempts were successful. In very cold weather, if the batteries were low, our usual method was to use the belt pulley method using the Super A as a starter.
