Yep, you need to be stone cold sober while running this machine. The operator's seat is surrounded by rotating shafts, bevel and spur gears, and many moving chains. The cable drums on either side of the operator are always in motion. Your complete attention is divided between what you are digging and avoiding slack in any of the three cables each of which has several idler pulleys. Loose clothing is a no-no. I think there are four (ea) foot pedals and four levers and your hands and feet are constantly moving. The last owner was a Judge by the name of Woodbury who built, in the '50s, a picturesque water powered mill across the road from his large antique (ca 1790) farm outside of Manchester (Bedford), NH. The mill is still functional and is the centerpiece of a mall built 25 years ago. He authored a book describing his efforts in building the dam and mill. While I was in the military during the middle '60s, I happened upon the book in the base library. When I got home I went to the site but he had died a few years before. All of his equipment, tools, real estate were sold at auction in the early '70s.
