I'm no engineer either, but I don't see where the side load comes from? I would think that a shaft with a U-joint and hanger bearing would impose less of a side load than a belt or chain drive, right? Especially the belt drive since that will need to be tighter and will pull to the side. I don't understand thrusts and all that stuff, but I was thinking that the hanger bearing would take up the side load. I think I'm going to head up to the machine shop today and see what they think of my idea and if they can get the parts I need.
