1466 transmission noise.

We have a 1466 that makes a grinding noise that seems to be coming from the transmission. The noise is worse when in 2nd gear and is really noticeable going down a steep grade.We've been using it avoiding 2nd gear with no problems but this winter we'd like to fix it.I've had reputable IH guys tell me that it sounds like the nut on the speed transmission counter shaft has come loose,and that its a common problem with this model. Any comments?
