My dad has a cousin who, when he was young, mowed through a bumblebee nest. The bees, of course, took offense to this, and the cousin ended up bailing off the tractor without bothering to slow the tractor down, much less disengage the mower. I guess he's now minus a chunk of cheek(not on the face, either).
Bumblebees were always a concern before the days of enclosed cabs. I don't know how many times my dad had to go "rescue" an abandoned tractor that my brothers or I had jumped off of(after stopping them, of course!), figuring we had a better chance of outrunning the bees on foot...naturally, by the time dad got there the bees were long gone. Finally, we learned how to not make the bees too mad....I can still picture my grandad sitting on a Super M pulling a doublebar IH trail mower, bumblebees swarming around his head, and him just nonchalantly "shooshing" them away with his hand. Don't remember him ever getting stung either!
Dad wasn't so lucky one time when his IH340 utility(reversed for a hay sweep) died right on top of a nest. It was before my time, but mom said he looked like he had the mumps after that one.
