I would want some experience in a parts department first. There is a lot more to it than it seems like however I will say the parts is by far the most profitable part of any dealership. Any generic part such as filters, points, wires etc. will have very slim margins and high sales and the more special parts will have much higher margins with slower sales and higher inventory costs. Unless you can get the volume into the $20,000 range for a part time business it won't be worth it. I think you will be lucky to clear 10% on new parts, used may be higher - I don't know. This is just my thinking - maybe someone else would have better figures. If you love the business you may have fun but it will take time. Good luck!
