I think most of the replies have missed on which holes you are referring to. You said the left side of the block but I'm guessing you are asking about the two holes, plugged with cork, on the gasket mating surface between the pan and the block. I always thought they were some kind of indexing hole for the machining processes when the blocks were made. I pull them out and replace with new whenever I send a block to be tanked. I don't know this for sure, just my guess. Rollie
