I had similar problems with my 300. It had been converted to 12 volt and it would start in warm weather easily but in the winter it wasn't getting run to much and I was lucky if it started without jumping it. I finally went to a local boneyard and bought a mag and replaced the distributor ignition and it starts like a brand new tractor. It never sounded like a farmall either but it does now since I made the change. I always felt the timing was off but couldn't adjust the distributor timing like you should. I didn't realize with it until I made the changeover to the mag that I had to actually take the distributor off and and turn the drive lug. But I'm not complaining. I'm one of the fellows that prefer the mag over the regular distributor so I am really happy with it and it is used now a whole lot more than it ever has during cold weather. I even use it to plow snow from time to time. Now if I had a cab and power steering I'd be a happy camper.
