Had an H farmall that was an old beater. Electrical charging system was a little weak and battery box was missing. The battery just kind of sat in the space wear it goes. Alot of times I would just park tractor on slope and roll start it to save on the battery. One day I did this and smoke started coming out from under gas tank. I shut tractor off and got off to imspect. Smoke was still coming up. After inspecting I found that the wrong battery post had gotten up against the gas line and becuase of the short it had turned the gas line cherry red hot. Grease and dirt build up on the line was what was burning and smoking. After pulling the battery off the fuel line everything cooled back down and I realized how lucky I was that it didn't melt through the gas line and cause a gas fire. From then on I always made sure that the battery was set in there so that the grounded post was toward the gas line.
