i wouldn't pull the heads unless there is a valve problem . pull the oil pan and clean good after cleaning from the the top . clean good and blow out good . check to see if PCV is working ok . if not with new PCV check for pluged port/ orfice in throttle body . i lost a engine because of no ventilation for the engine . caused what you described above . caked crud and leaking valve gasket . oil leak caused because of pressure build up in the closed system , crud build up from fumes remaining in engine . i had replaced a leaking valve cover gasket and tried to clean the crud the best i could but some apparently went to the oil pan and clogged the screen later on while wife driving ...she called oil light on .... too late ....after eng. rebuild i had rear seal leak . found PCV not working caused by plugged orfice in throttle body this in turn let pressure build up forcing oil past rear main seal.... learned all this after i lost the engine
