Hydraulic Lift-all pump on M

We have been trying to replace the lift-all pump on a Farmall "M" with a rebuilt pump. We have had a problem re-assembling the valve lever when we attach the pump to the reservoir. It is difficult to see when it is engaged properly. We thought we had it engaged properly but the pump will not automatically move to the neutral position when the lifting operation is completed and we cannot shift it to the neutral position manually. Any assistance would be appreciated by some of you that may have had this experience. Could it be that we do not have the valve lever engaged properly, or could there be a problem with a rebuilt pump that we purchased.
