Oil Pump Pickup

I pulled the oil pan off of my Super A today. There is about 1/8" of gunk in the bottom of the pan but I guess I can't complain last time it was off was 25 years ago. There is a small hole in the top of my oil pickup and it is full of oil. The screen is clean and I had good oil pressure before. Isn't the oil pickup suppose to float?? It didn't say anything about it in my service manual. I should would appreciate some info. Thanks for the help!!
