I just replaced the entire brake system on my Super M, and didn't do anything to the balls. When they heat up, they become a blueish color (don't think of any sick terms now), of course heat from stress and friction of hitting the brakes. There actually isn't any advantage of lubing the balls at all, just with a tractor with disk brakes up through the 60 series they need to be used, otherwise everything seizes up. Good luck with a classic.
