3444 Transmission

I have a IH 3444 that has a transmission problem. When the gear shift is in neutral, the tranny is in reverse. If you put into 2, 3 or 4, the tranny is locked up and will stall the engine. Is this a similar transmission to the 350 and 400 IH tractors? The gear shift won't go into the slot for reverse and first gear. I thought one could take the top cover off of the tranny to take a look, but it is real bugger to get off. Is there an easy fix to this?
