Murray: I would see what a set of standard axles from a scrap yard would cost. Then run an add on the long axles, see if some of these guys so concerned about you destroying the long axles are prepared to put their money where their mouth is. Lot of work changing them. Also very expensive if you knock the garage wall off its moorings. If I were to shorten them I think I would take wheel off and use a power hack saw as oposed to cut off saw. You could set power hack saw up on blocking. My concern with cut off saw or torch is heat both on axle and the transfer of heat to bearings. I once had to use heat to remove cast hub from axle of 300. The axle twisted and broke about a year later. I have no proof heat was cause, but those axles are hardened. I have always had my suspicions though. Also the only axle I ever broke on a Farmall.
