I agree with the other post that if the bench test says you have enough spark to arc the safety gap you are ok with the Mag. However, to answer your question: I found that the best way to test my F4 magneto on my F12 was to run it backward on the workbench to avoid tripping the impulse. I use a cordless drill with a 1/4in wooden dowel in the chuck. The dowel fits into the mag a little loose, but just moving the drill a little to the side binds it up and it works great.
