You could put a transfer switch so that you could transfer between batteries or run both in parrallel. this would solve your charging problems .Also if one battery does die you could always start it with the other,, I could be wrong but I think I would go 12 volts.this is how many public saftey vehicals are wired ,,, my 2 cents
