This is a fairly easy split, certainly no more difficult that splitting at the clutch. I did it a while back on my Farmall C. One of the posts below mentions that you have to take the drive shaft coupling loose before you do the split. That is not correct. All you have to do is take everything loose on the outside(the throttle rods, the touch control rods, clutch linkage and anything else that goes accross the joint) Then support the front and the back (On the C, the back is nearly balanced). On the A, I would block the front axle with wedges and then support under the clutch with cribbing. You could rig an engine hoist to hold the back. Then you take out the bolts at the joint and the drive shaft will slide right out of the clutch as you roll back the rear section. I used long bolts in the joint holes as a guide. In my case, I had no trouble getting the drive shaft to slide back in the clutch when I reassembled. Just make sure you don't disengage the clutch while the thing is appart. If you do, the clutch plate will fall out of alignment and you will have a lot of trouble. You will need to take the drive shaft joint apart after you get things far enough apart to do that. That is necessary to remove the rear half of the coupling so you can replace the seal. You will find two shaft ends, bottom one is the counter shaft end, covered with a cap and gasket. That was where mine was leaking, as someone had reassembled without the gasket in the past. Top shaft is the main drive shaft and has a seal that runs on the coupling half and also a gasket under the seal holder. I'd replace all the seals and gaskets while you have it apart. Also make sure you have both dowel pins in the joint. One was missing in my C and the hole it was supposed to go in was open all the way into the transmission, also causing a leak. Hope this helps.

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
