I have family in Northern Maine and during the winter there EVERYBODY plugs in(well most everybody). My great uncle lives in an apartment building and you see the cords dangling out of windows to go to their cars. Whenever I visit in the winter I've got one of those dipstick oil heaters. I only use it when the engine's already warm because it doesn't circulate the oil, but it'll keep the oil warm enough that the truck starts right up no matter how cold it is.
This year maybe we'll take my wife's Mercedes diesel up. Thats got a real block heater, and real glowplugs that'll go 30sec at a shot on their own. Its surprising how easy that car starts for an '81 with 224,000 miles.
