3444 hydro shift problems

test drove a 3444 loader tractor with hydro shift. i had to give it a lot of gas before the tranny would start to engage,once it jumped into gear it seemed to run fine. what could be the reason for this.the owner is asking 4800 for tractor,loader and box blade,is it a fair price. thank you
