Sean, I noticed that no one replied to your question regarding detergent and non-detergent oils. I'll do my best to try to explain it. Way back when the world was young, 'bout the only oil available was a non-detergent oil. This oil did not have the additives that the more modern oils have. Consequently, all the dirt and stuff that accumulated in the engine tended to stick inside the engine and settle to the bottom of the pan. Modern oils besides having detergents, have acid neutralizers, viscosity modifiers, and have suspension agents that hold contaminates in the oil rather than allowing them to settle out like non-detergents. If you have an engine that has been run with non-detergent oils most of its life and you put detergent oil in, you in all likelyhood will start loosening some of this crud up. You might be lucky and get by with changing the oil and filter fairly frequently for a while to remove the loosened stuff but you could end up plugging a line or passage. The best thing, in my opinion, would be to determine if you can what the previous owner was using. Of course, on a new engine rebuild, I would start out using detergent oil. Hope this helps and if I've given any false information I hope someone will step in and correct me. Larry
