The engine serial # may not be the same as the chassis. Mine was in sad shape like yours but was able to determine the serial number by placing a sheet of paper over the tag and rubbing back and forth with a pencil. Its an old spy movie trick. The casting date on the engine will also help narrow down the year somewhat. 8-15-T for example, is Aug 15 1950. 47=Q, 48=R, 49=S, 50=T, 51=U or W, X=52, Y=53, Z=54. But keep in mine an engine made in Dec. could be used on a tractor made in Jan.
