John, you are correct in what you say about moving the distributor, but what you want to do is remove the distributor entirley, rotate the GEAR on the back so the cam lobe is on the rub block of the points, (with the rotor pointing to #1 position on the distributor cap) and then reinsert the whole distributor and lock it down.Then you can go back to the static adjustment, which is right out of the service manual. I'd come do it for you if you were in N. TX.! Good luck.
