John, you don't mention, but you've got me wondering. When it ran well, was it with the old magneto? Question is did the battery/coil distributor come after the fact. What you may be dealing with the is the lag on the impulse coupling of the mag which was, I think, 37-1/2 degrees. I don't know if that made a difference in the way the lugs lined up on the back side of the governor drive. If you have a parts book, look to see if the governor drive gear for the magneto is a different part number from the one for the distributor. Just shooting in the dark, here. My parts book is up on the mountain. Got a wooden nickel says the problem may be related.
