Very frequently, that problem is caused by voltage drop in the cables. Those stranded cables will corrode up under the insulation where you can't see it, which drives the resistance in the cable way up, and cuts down on voltage to the starter motor. A new set of heavy duty cables doesn't cost much. Make sure your grounding points are clean, and the clamps on the battery end are clean and tight. If that doesn't fix it, rebuilding the bendix is the next cheapest way to go. Perhaps The Red or someone will see this and give you the details on that.
