966 shifting

I have a IH 966 that grinds when you go to switch gears or put it into hi or low while in gear. It shifts best when idled down and stopped. 3rd and 4th gear seems to be the worst and real low on the shift pattern. I have adjusted the dump valve and transmission brake as the book recommended. What next? I sure would not like to have a loader or snow blower on such a bad shifting tractor.
