Your correct so far. If you take the cover off the manifold switch you should see a shaft that rotates a copper plate that makes contact with the two studs. That shaft is connected to the butterfly valve setup in the manifold. The idea was to cut power to the coil when running on diesel. The previous owner probably dismanteled the switch in some way.
